Cost & Pricing

What is CLIN?

Contract Line Item Number

A CLIN is a numbered line in a contract that separately identifies a deliverable or service for ordering, pricing, and invoicing. CLINs carry their own pricing arrangement (firm-fixed-price, cost-reimbursable, T&M) and are how money is tracked and billed against work.

Proposals are priced CLIN by CLIN; invoices and funding are managed the same way. Sub-line items (SLINs) break a CLIN down further when needed.

In FORGEFORGE's cost tooling structures the proposal and cost ledger by CLIN so billing reconciles to the contract.

Common questions

What is the difference between a CLIN and a SLIN?

A CLIN is a top-level priced line item; a SLIN (sub-line item) subdivides a CLIN — for example to separate funding sources or delivery locations — without changing its pricing arrangement.
